How to get your boating license in Maine

Boater Safety Course

Do I need a boating license to operate a boat in Maine?

As of Jan 1st, 2024, people born after 1998 must complete a boater safety course to operate a motorboat exceeding twenty-five (25) horsepower for recreational purposes on inland and territorial waters of Maine. Exceptions to this requirement include registered Maine guides commercial fishermen, daily boat renters, and merchant mariners.

Check our the State of Maine's website for more detailed information regarding changes to boating regulations throughout the season.

Who else needs to take a recreational boating safety course?

It is essential for anyone looking to navigate Maine's beautiful but treacherous waters responsibly to participate in a recreational boating safety education course. These courses are designed to equip boaters with the knowledge and skills needed to operate and maintain a boat safely, while also familiarizing them with Maine's boating laws and resources.

How long is the course?

The course typically spans approximately six hours and covers a comprehensive range of topics, including:

  • Knowing your boat
  • Boat preparation
  • Boat handling and operating
  • Boating regulations
  • Boating emergencies
  • Environmental concerns
  • Waterskiing, jet skiing, and tubing

What happens after I complete the course?

Upon successful completion, participants receive a boater safety and education course certificate immediately. Completing a boating safety and education course ensures not only legal compliance but also fosters a culture of safety, responsibility, and enjoyment for all who venture onto Maine's waters. Visit relevant websites or consult local resources to find and enroll in a course near you, taking the first step towards safe and enjoyable boating experiences.

How much does the course cost?

There is currently a free online course that requests an optional $10 donation

Where can I take the course?

The Boating Safety Education Course is available online through BoatUS Foundation. This foundation is a nonprofit organization that champions boating safety.
